Joseph Thompson of Northamptonshire-Died in 1858 Sydney, Australia
« on: Tuesday 25 June 19 11:38 BST (UK) »
Hi All.

There is an article in the Sydney Paper about A Joseph Thompson whose relatives they are searching for.  http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nyu/

I have found that Joseph was indeed a native of Daventry having been born about 1779 and baptised in the Parish Church.

He married Mary Brown 19 Dec 1807 at St John P.C. Hackney

He had the following children baptised at St Paul P.C. Shadwell on 25 12 1818. The address noted on all the baptisms for the children was No. 194. High St.

Mary born 07 12 1808, Ann born 30 04 1810, Elizabeth born 28 09 1812, Joseph born 21 05 1814
Susannah born 04 09 1816, John born 13 08 1818.

Then followed by Henry born 06 04 1820, bap 22 04 1821, Samuel born 28 12 1821, bap 13 03 1822, Rebecca born 08 02 1823, bap 23 05 1824, Sarah born 17 02 1825, bap 29 05 1825, Thomas James born 30 03 1830, bap 11 07 1830, Richard born 10 01 1832, bap 13 05 1832.

Joseph and Mary with Ann, Elizabeth, Susannah, John, Henry all sailed in May to N.S.W. on the James Harris in 1834.

The Biographical Database of Australia has the details of the apparent  re-interments 1901,  and will likely have the details of the then living family members.

The NSW archives has the formal paperwork and has recently uploaded an index on these.

La Perouse Cemetery received many Thompson headstones.

Sorry to interrupt, but how do you find out what has been recently uploaded to the NSW archives website?

Many different ways  :D    here's some:

1. https://www.records.nsw.gov.au/  Scroll down, and subscribe to the e-newsletter
2. subscribe to papercopy of family history magazines, and read them https://www.tracesmagazine.com.au/
3. keep in touch with local history groups, and read their newsletters
4. SAG emails https://www.sag.org.au/
5. Attend functions with NSW Archivists as speakers
6. Read the rahs news announcements https://www.rahs.org.au/

Biographical Database of Australia's website http://www.bda-online.org.au/  search the indexes for free.

JM  I am a tad NSW centric, particularly 19th century history.

Thanks for the replies.

I contacted a relative in Canada who had Joseph in her DNA matches and she is now aware of the article.

Hi Sandy
I am a direct descendant of Joseph Thompson (actually there were quite a few generations of Josephs) - if that is what you are looking for?
I have a fair bit of family history info collated over the years - Thompson family back to mid-late 1600s in Northamptonshire from memory.
Haven't been active for a couple of years.
Happy to share
