Marriage certificate alias

I have an 1847 marriage certificate for 3X Great Grandmother and on it her name is listed as Eliza Jay alias Hicks. She's listed as a spinster and her father is shown as Edward Jay so I'm at a loss to explain where the "alias Hicks" comes from.

Any ideas?

One possibility is her parents weren't married i.e. mother's surname was Hicks?

Another possibility, brought up by someone other than her own family by their surname?

The full details are:
Date: 12 Sep 1847
Groom: William Jay, Age 34, Bachelor, Labourer, Great Warley, Father: John Jay
Bride: Eliza Jay alias Hicks, Age 21, Spinster, , Upminster, Father: Edward Jay

From my research by 1851 she was a widow living back with her father. Her age is listed as 25.

Update: She had a child with William Jay before he died and checking on the GRO I can see the mother's maiden name listed as Hicks so it looks like that was her birth name and she was somehow adopted by Edward Jay.

According to an anonymous postem on FreeBMD:

'Eliza HICKS married William JAY 12 September 1847 at Upminster Parish Church.'

The 'alias' on the certificate probably means that she was already known as JAY before they married.  GRO have indexed the marriage under both of Eliza's surnames.

Thanks, Carol, that's the certificate I have.

I'm now investigating to see if maybe her mum was a Hicks (and Eliza was illegitimate) or married a Hicks before Edward Jay.

Stating the obvious but have you looked for a baptism of Eliza Hicks ca 1825 with mother Elizabeth?
Edward & Elizabeth's marriage would be ideal..perhaps Jonas' mother was not Elizabeth, as he & Eliza are same age [as I understand it, 15 yr olds' ages were not rounded down in 1841].
