Raffell family Plymouth
« on: Wednesday 26 June 19 13:52 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for any information on the Raffell family in Plymouth (Devon). My great grandfather was Edwin Raffell. He and his family resided in the east stonehouse area (late 1800s). They moved to Bedwelly (Wales) in the early 1900's where my grandmother (Phyliss May Raffell) was born in 1908. Phyliss was one of several children born in either Plymouth or Bedwellty. Sometime after they moved back to Plymouth although I can find very little information, ie dates, addresses etc.. I'm doing a bit of research for my mum (Phyliss's daughter) as she was an only child and keen to find any info on her family. Any help to fill gaps would be very much appreciated.

Hello and welcome to Rootschat!

I was interested in your post as my maiden name was Rassell and over the years it has often been misheard as Raffell and other variations.  I can't help with any information regarding the Raffells I'm afraid but would mention that I often find Rassell/Russell mistranscribed as it's easy for a handwritten 'u' to be read as 'a'.  Worth bearing in mind when you're searching records, your folk might be transcribed as Ruffell.

We could be related somewhere way back - my folk were in Hampshire by the coast in the 1700s.

Good luck with your research  :)

And a warm welcome to Rootschat from me.

To add to the host of information found by candrjm we have on the General Register Office (GRO) index:
birth Dec qtr 1840 Honiton vol 10 p101: Jane PERRYMAN mmn COLEMAN

There are a couple of other Jane PERRYMANs born in Devon at the right time, but the 1881 census gives Jane's birthplace as Brancombe which is in the Honiton registration district.

I had a look on GRO for William RAFFELL's birth but, as civil registration began in mid-1837, he may have been born too early.

Philip

ADDED:
this gives the beginnings of a tree:
William RAFFELL (born c1837) married 1864 Jane PERRYMAN (born 1840 mmn COLEMAN)
Edwin RAFFELL (born 1879 mmn PERRYMAN) married 1907 Maria E MINERS (born 1880 mmn TOZER)
Phyllis May RAFFELL (born 1908 mmn MINERS)

Censuses from 1841 onwards (indexed on FamilySearch) will help fill out information on the PERRYMAN, COLEMAN, TOZER, and MINERS lines.
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

Hi canrjm. I'm looking to fill the gaps on their lives in Plymouth and Bedwellty, yet also tracing the family back further. As far as I'm aware, my mother is the only existing member (other than me and my siblings) from Edwin's branch of the Raffell bloodline. My grandmother Phylliss was one of several children of Edwin, who I believe were named Phyliss May Raffel (my grandmother), Wallace Reginald Raffell (died aged 1), Albion Reed Raffell and Reginald C Raffel (unsure if more). These are now deceased I have been unable to trace any link to children they may have had. On this basis I can only presume there were none. As my mother was an only child of Phyliss, this leads me to believe that she may be the last existing member of Edwin's line. Hence my search for clarification. Although a trace back further could unearth links to second cousins etc.

Further to my earlier post, I was having trouble finding the Raffells in the 1911 census so tried searching for Ruffell instead.

Hey presto!  Found them at 69 Derlwyn Street, Phillips Town, New Tredegar.  Dad Edwin, Mum Maria Elizabeth, Daughter Phyllis May aged 3 and also Son Wallace Reginald aged 2 is recorded but then sadly struck through with DEAD written beside his name.  Both children born New Tredegar.  The census recorded people living at the address on 2nd April 1911

Edwin's occupation was Coal Miner Hitcher (below ground).

Just had another look at the record and the Raffells weren't the only occupants of no. 69, the word Lodgers is written on their page and it says they occupied 2 of the 6 rooms.  The previous page is for Edwin James, his wife Elizabeth Ann Jane, daughters Edith Matilda and Sarah Ann (aged 9 and 5 respectively) and also two boarders.  This household occupied 4 of the 6 rooms in no. 69.

In 1901 Edwin aged 21 was living with his parents William (age 63 Navy pensioner) and Jane both born Branscombe Devon at 3 Melbourne Street, Plymouth.
In 1891 Edwin aged 11 was with his parents at the same address 3 Melbourne St, on this census his father's occupation is Servant Govt. Employ.
In 1881 the family were at 5 Melbourne Cottages Plymouth (possibly the same dwelling but later renumbered?) and William was a Mariner.

Again it was difficult to find the family as in 1891 their name has been transcribed as Ruffell and there are lots of Ruffells!
