KD? I'm not sure what that means medpat, but thank you for confirming what I thought/hoped for! I've now got to find some photographic evidence - I'm returning to The National Archives soon and have added it to my list of things to investigate

I don't doubt medpat's experiences.  I'd like to see it on a printed kit list form though and in the great scheme of things won't lose sleep over it if that proves difficult.

the reason I want to see it in writing is because I'm writing a book and have become a bit of a pedant when it comes to writing about 'facts'!

If you'd care to look at http://www.rootschat.com/links/01nze/ I think not only that you will see no "for the use of" anywhere but that should do for your book??

I do note that these are army, if the RAF had their own quirks, I couldn't possibly say!

In my haste to post yesterday I omitted to say that it is the AF H1157, always referred to as your eleven fifty-seven, that is the definitive document.  There are spare columns for other things to be written in if necessary.

Thank you to everyone on RootsChat and ww2talk who provided the information that MaxD requested on my behalf. I am always bowled over by the generosity of people in sharing their knowledge. This has all been extremely useful and informative. As MaxD pointed out nowhere is there anything like "Shoes, canvas, for the use of" (I made an error when I quoted from my Uncle's letter, it was 'for the use of' not 'for the wearing of') but I rather think it was his jocular way of describing his canvas shoes following the format of many of the lists you have provided such as 'Drawers, cotton, long', 'Drawers, woolen', and 'Shoes Canvas Rubber Sole'

Thank you to PackRat on WW2talk for explaining 'Housewife/hussif/hussiv' - that's got to go in my book!

I'm off to The National Archives tomorrow with a list as long as my arm, so the information you have provided will save a lot of time that I can now devote to more serious stuff.
