74TH Lancers
« on: Friday 28 June 19 05:59 BST (UK) »
Hi
Was the 74th Lancers called anything else and does anyone know where they were in the 1800s.  I am looking for William Carroll who was in the 74th Lancers and his father was also called William Carroll. They were both born in Ireland.  I found an 1841 Census that says they were in Glasgow at that time.
Thanks
Linda

There was no such regiment as 74th Lancers. The 17th Lancers were in Glasgow at the time of the 1841 census and there was a Private William Carroll of that regiment recorded, with rounded down age 20. Is that who you mean?

Yes you are absolutely right, no idea where I got the 74th from!  It also lists Arabella/Isabella Purcell as 17th Lancers and that is who he married. How come she would be listed like that?

It looks like married quarters and my guess would be that she is the wife of either Bernard or William Purcell, both privates in 17th Lancers in Govan. When did she marry William Carroll?

I haven't been able to find a marriage date for William Carroll and Arabella/Isabella Purcell as yet.
