William Rice and wife Harriett, looking for deaths - no idea where!
« on: Sunday 30 June 19 11:52 BST (UK) »
Apologies in advance, I have really no idea where they might have died!

William Rice b1834 or thereabouts , married Harriett Saunders (b1839, Chew Magna, Somerset), on 18 April 1859 in Bristol St Nicholas

In 1861 the couple are living with Joseph and Elizabeth Rice in Ryton, Warwickshire, the relationship given to head of household are son and daughter in law.

Brick making seems to be the job of choice for the men in the family, in 1861 father Joseph, his brother James and three sons, including William, are all brickmakers.

I cannot find a census record for them after 1861. I’ve also not found any children for them

Could anyone find out what happened to William and Harriett?

Wiltshire: Mathews
Carmarthen: Thomas, Lewis
Australia: Mary Lewis, transportee, married Henry Brown - what happened to her?

Would this be the family on the 1861 living in Cheshire rather than Warwickshire?

The 1861 census given above looks very likely.

Henry born 1837 and Thomas born 1840 can both be found in the GRO index Henry with mother’s maiden name of Laybut and Thomas with mother’s maiden name of Layour. The areas of birth tie in with the census entries,

Joseph Rice married Elizabeth Laybut
2 January 1832
St Philip’s C of E Birmingham

1851 census Crigglestone Yorkshire
Joseph Rice 38 brickmaker and innkeeper born Northants Long Santon ( that’s what has been transcribed but I’m not sure that’s what it says and I can’t find anywhere of that name in Northants)
Elizabeth wife 45 born Olney Bucks
Henry 13 born Leighton Buzzard Bucks
Thomas 10 born Lester

The baptism in Ryton gives the father Joseph as a mason which i think is rather different to a Brick maker.

Has William been found in the 1841 or 1851 census yet?

He's not with his parents in 1851 but this could be William with his grandmother in 1851-

Jane Rice   69 Brickmaker's widow
William Rice   grandson 17 Brickmaker, b. Wrighton Dunsmore, Warwickshire

On the 1861 Joseph Rice has a brother James (b.1818) living with them. This could be James and Joseph's baptism showing their mother is Jane -

James Rice
Age - 0
Baptism - 24 May 1818, Eydon, Northamptonshire
Father - Thomas Rice, Brickmaker
Mother - Jane Rice

Joseph Rice
Age - 0
Baptism - 7 Nov 1813, Eydon, Northamptonshire
Father - Thomas Rice, Brickmaker
Mother - Jane Rice

Therefore the above 1851 ties in with the grandmother's name of Jane.
