Mabel, yes I would like anything about the rest of the family now, please.  I am struggling to find the workhouse entry (that is listed on FS), but on Ancestry, even using various wrong spellings of Griffeth/Griffiths.

Jen, excellent.  Your fuzzy searching is superb.  I tried all sorts of versions.  I am impressed and grateful.

Catherine Griffiths married my grandfather's bother.  I recently made contact with the great granddaughter of Catherine's sister Violet.  I will pass this on.  William was an orchestral piccolo player.

My great grandmother ran the General Jackson pub, where William Henry Griffiths was staying in 1901.

Is it usual to refer to workhouse inmates as patients?  I looked at the summary pages as well.

Workhouses had infirmaries which served the medical needs of the local population, not just the inmates.  People could be born in the workhouse infirmary, have medical treatment there, and maybe die in it, without ever having been a pauper inmate.  They would be described as patients.

Were workhouses used as dumping grounds for people with health problems?

Not really.  On the census page where your chap is listed, there are 30 names in all.  He is one of 7 patients; the other 23 are inmates whose reason for being there was that they couldn't support themselves financially.  Many would have stayed there for a short time only.
