Thanks Mabel.  That's really good.  You said something different about William on comment 14, though.

I am really grateful.

Martin

This is all keeping me very busy.  Thank you again, Jen and Mabel and Carol.

I hadn't realised that Retika was a previous married name.

Ernest Leggett, who married Catherine was my grandfather's brother.  Their father was George Daniel Leggett, 1837-1921.  We have been unable to find him on the 1871 and 1881 censuses.  He was living in Scarborough in the 1860s, as his wife, Mary Boynton had children by him, only Mary junior surviving.  He was a fisherman, so he MIGHT have been at sea on both census days.  We know he was illiterate.  By 1890 he seems to have deserted his wife, (although she continued to describe herself as married, right through 1911) before 'taking up' with my great grandmother, Jane Adamson, although we have found no evidence of a marriage.  They had six children, by 1900.  Once again he is missing in 1901.

Jane had previously been married, aged 29 to a man of 70, with whom she had a child, nine and a half months later.  The husband died soon after.

We still wonder about those missing census years.

Martin

GrenDav2018, thank you for these updates. It's always good to fill in a few gaps. Where was George Leggett Sr in 1901? That is a gap I'd like to fill. He seems to have been very good at avoiding putting his name on official documents. Also in 1871 and 1881, where was he?  I'm still looking.
