Mother's maiden name?

I'm hoping someone here might be able to help me with something I've just spotted on this extract from the parish registers of Winterbourne Houghton, Dorset.

This entry shows the christening of my ancestor Martha Joyce in December 1658. Her parents were Jesper/Jasper and Mary Joyce.

I hadn't noticed it until today but the entries records Mary as "Mary Joyce alias Chalcrott/Chalcroft" [I'm having a guess at the spelling as it is faded]. Could this be her maiden name?

Can anyone suggest what her name might be or if I am about right with my guess.

It's not the maiden name, but another name that Jasper used/was known by.
If you do a search on here you will find several threads discussing aliases.

Thanks for that, I hadn't thought of Chalcott though.

I had seen that the entry read "alias Chalcott" but didn't twig that this related to Jasper lol! I have seen alias used several times before in my research [sometimes causing much confusing!] so it isn't new really.

What puzzles me is where the name came from and why he used it? I have his christening and the marriage of his parents. His father was named George and his mother was either Anne Harte or Anne Courte [I'll be posting a new thread with a copy of the PR entry tomorrow]. So where did this "Chalcott" come from? Could it to do with his father's parents?

Alternatively could it be related to a place? I also have ancestors in Wisborough Green and Rudgwick with the name "Steyning alias Cowper" and "Cowper alias Steyning" [Steyning is also spelt Steynning, Stenning and Steninge] and there appears to be a possible connection with the Steyning area of Sussex. Could the same be said about "Chalcott"? Could it relate to a place, or area within a parish perhaps?

Or could Jasper have simply been using a different name at some times?

There were many reasons why people used an "alias". Sometimes it was simply to differentiate between 2 individuals of the same name, sometimes as you said it was related to a place name.
