Ancestry - Audio
« on: Monday 01 July 19 13:19 BST (UK) »
Hello All,

My brother-in-law was taught to play the guitar by Ray Honeyball of Hedgehoppers Anonymous fame. Ray lived two doors down when BiL was 16.

I have an audio file of them teaching/learning and then the BiL playing solo with advice being given by Ray. This was an important part and time of BiL's life as he did not have any aptitude for anything else. He was a backing musician for four years until an accident stopped his playing.

It seems that Ancestry will accept all sorts of written documents and all sorts of images, but not sounds, nor video.  Unless someone knows differently?  Is there any way of doing this?

Regards

Chas

No idea if you can attach video/sound files to a person on your ancestry tree, sorry. Perhaps contact Ancestry and ask them.

If all else fails though you could upload the file to something like dropbox and include a link in the notes on your tree?
Though some people may be wary of clicking on an external link its the best alternate I can think of.

I donít think they accept video or audio files. It might well require significant infrastructure upgrades if they were to offer that type of functionality.

if you click on your tree name and go to Media gallery there is an option for audio as well as photos stories and video although have never added audio or video so not sure how it works

Seems it is just a record - it does not let you add anything.

According to the Ancestry Help pages -  when you get to the Media Gallery the "Add Media" button in the top right corner should allow you to add any supported media including audio files - that said it is "difficult" trying to find what file types are actually supported

To ensure it is saved somewhere, and if all else fails, you could change it's extension to upload it. For instance if the file is called "hedeghoppers.mp3", change it to "hedgehoppers_mp3.doc". That way it'll probably upload fine, as Ancestry will see it as (in this case) a Word document, and it should be obvious from the name how to get it to play.
