I see that the registration was September quarter 1859, so another pointer to the burial being the correct one.

General Registry Office Index to death registrations:
TARPY, Patrick; age at death: 20;
GRO Reference: 1859 S Quarter Birmingham Volume 06D Page 135

You can search GRO birth and death indexes for free. All you need to do is register your email address and then sign-in whenever you want to search.
N.B. There are some mistakes in GRO indexes.

Have you found anything of his mother?
There are a few of that surname in Birmingham but i can’t see a Margaret in deaths or census.

heywood,

The only information I have for his parents are as my original post, except his mother's maiden name was CAHALAN.

There is one other aspect which eludes me.............namely, a record of his death from that unidentified Birmingham Workhouse I mentioned.

For the moment,

Patrick wasn't necessarily a resident in the Workhouse as such.  Hospitals were a part of the Workhouse, and therefore he may only have been admitted to the hospital.  :-\
Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

BumbleB,

Birmingham Library Archives have confirmed that records for the Birmingham Workhouse/Infirmary were destroyed!!   C'est la vie

Might be a version of Callaghan.
Who was the informant of his death ? If he died in the workhouse or workhouse infirmary, the person who registered the death was likely to have been a member of staff of the institution.
What additional information were you expecting to get from workhouse records?

I was hoping, being eternally optimistic, that the Workhouse records could offer a confirmatory inkling that he was the same person as the "Subject"

Not all that relevant perhaps, but Patrick Tarpy married Margaret Cahellon (sic) on 9th February 1823 at Laughlin, Roscommon.  So there would be several children born before Patrick junior.
