Mcintosh family
« on: Thursday 04 July 19 13:18 BST (UK) »
I'm trying to find more information of a certain Mcintosh family who moved to Flint, Wales any help would be greatly appreciated!

I have James Mcintosh born 1844 living in Flint in the 1871, 1891, 1901 and 1911 census. His family consists as follows:

Wife: Maria Ann Hills b. 1839 Leigh, Essex d. 1915 Flint, Wales.
Children:
- Margaret b. 1868 Flint, d. 1936 Glasgow m. John Hillock
- Thomas b. 1869 Flint
- Sarah b. 1871 Flint

In the 1901 census James' brother Thomas was living with the family born in 1852 and listed as being born in Ireland.

I assume that James and Thomas moved from Kildare as James is listed as being born in both Dublin and Kildare in separate censuses. I am trying to locate their siblings and parents etc.
Thanks for the help!

There is a possibilty that this is James' baptism LINK
on Oct 16 1836 in Clane Co. Kildare
The parents are shown as Thomas McINTOSH and Margaret DEEVEY

This year would tie in with the age of 34 given on the 1871 census
and choice of names for the children

There is also a possible son Thomas baptised Feb 04 1839
and a possible daughter Mary baptised Feb 02 1834
however the mother's maiden name is not given on these records.

Have you his marriage record to help with parents' names?

Unfortunately I've been unable to track down his marriage or death record. I'm unsure if the Thomas you listed could be the same as the ten year difference, although the baptism of James could be promising.

I'd keep them in mind as literacy caused many errors in census returns and as people aged they did not calculate ages etc. with the same accuracy.

On the 1871 census James was 34 => bc 1837
by 1901 he was only 58 = bc 1843

If his father was in the army and based in the Curragh Camp in Kildare or a barracks in Dublin, the family may have no connection in Ireland.
If they do for searching in this period you need the parish they came from to start an accurate search.
McIntosh is not a common Kildare/Dublin name and on searching in a paid site with baptism transcriptions this was the only James McIntosh baptism recorded in Kildare in a ten year period; but this is dependent on the number of transcribed records and records available.

I would suggest holding on to the information for reference.

Also have you searched for Thomas McIntosh around Flint as there are a few and born in Ireland.
If you could locate his marriage and a connection to James you could find their parents that way

That's true. Thanks for your help!
I've searched for the Thomas Mcintosh's born in Ireland in Flint because of your suggestion.
The only one it possibly could be is in the 1881 census. He is listed as born in 1841 and married to one Mary A born the same year but in Bilston, Staffordshire. His daughter is Margaret M born 1876 in Flint. This date fits better with the baptism you found as well.
