Edith Ivy Benford/Edith Harriet Benford - family secrets.
« on: Thursday 04 July 19 14:41 BST (UK) »
Hello Rootschat

Please help

Edith known as Edith Ivy Benford born 1888 Fulham - unable to find her birth certificate and no knowledge of her parents or in 1901 census

The family rumour is that there were secrets from her childhood

From looking at records believe that Edith is Edith Harriet Benford born in Marylebone buts says Fulham in 1911 Census either because she doesn’t know her birth place or wants to forget her childhood and doesn’t know her middle name or has chosen another middle name either through choice or forgetting her childhood again

The family secret seems to be the mother had a mental health condition and the siblings being put in the workhouse

With regard to workhouses, have seen some children born in London, their families moved to Kent and if needed poor relief sent back to London

These poor children were born in Marylebone but given poor relief in Kensington perhaps their mother had moved to Kensington after her husband died in 1894, so was poor relief claimed where you lived also

Thank you for your help

Fantastic spot - you've sealed the deal.

Berry doesn't come up on Ancestry but does come up on FindMyPast where I presume you saw?
Maiden names usually coming up on Ancestry!

The three year difference people made up their ages on a whim or guessed - did parents keep birth certificates and baptism records safely to pass onto their children (or institutions) or if lost would a child in those days know how to or be able to afford to obtain copies?  Without a computer to find 'best guesses' and not knowing your birth year and where born must have been difficult to find.

Having a birth certificate/baptism record couldn't have been compulsory for work/getting married/other.

I thought the July birthday had clinched it and the Marylebone/Kensington links - but finding Berry was brilliant.

I wonder if the mother and children were ever reunited, it seems they did as the mother dies in the same area her daughter married.

Why has Edith been separated from her sisters in 1901 - wonder where she is?
