Service Records for the Royal Engineers, 1891
« on: Friday 05 July 19 08:30 BST (UK) »
Hello,

On the 1891 Census for Kent, I'm looking at Richard Kean, Born Manchester 1860.

I think this might be him:

Could anyone on here please tell me where I might find a Service Record for him please?

He's a Sapper in the Royal Engineers on the 1891.

Cheers, Romilly

Can't see a Royal Engineers record but FindMyPast has an 1886 Manchester Regiment militia attestation for a Richard Kean born Hulme, claiming to be aged 22. Address vouched for by another Richard Kean (his father?) 6 Harper Street.

Thanks for finding this ShaunJ.

I don't currently have access to FindMyPast unfortunately:-(

I have a (strong) hunch that Richard Kean and William James Wilson, (my late Grandfather) were one and the same person(!)

And yes, - that Address is right:-) Richard Kean's Parents were Richard Kean and Frances Kean (Née Butler).

Many Thanks Rosie,

I'll try and find it, and see if it gives any details of parents names, his DOB or anything else like that!

The 1886 one looks good, as he's down as a painter and approx correct age. Not sure about the WW1 one as he would have been mid 50s by then. My grandfather was b. 1866 and served but 'adjusted' his age.

Hi Gadget, -

Yes, the 1886 Manchester Regiment one looks good.

My Grandfather was only 'missing' until his Marriage in Swansea in 1893. After that, he can be 'accounted' for until his Death in Hendon in December 1937.

I guess it depends whether a Death for Richard Kean, Born Manchester 1860, can be found...

I've been looking for deaths but can't find any that fit so far. Neither do migration records.

Thanks for looking Gadget.

I couldn't find any either, - and so it does make me wonder if Richard Kean/William James Wilson were one and the same person?

William James Wilson's 4th son was called Richard Wilson...
