(The duration of illness, if stated, would always come after the description.)

That's what I was trying to point out in my reply #6  :) I wasn't agreeing that there should be any commas, simply that the (imaginary) insertion of them should come after the duration of the two conditions

The number of weeks refers to how long the condition lasted, so if commas were to be inserted surely it should read (odd as it seems) labour 6 weeks, acute tuberculosis 4 weeks, certified?

I am on e reader,  cannot do attachments,  and NO access to my proper puter with jpegs anyway BUT I can confirm that in New South Wales, Australia,  the d.c. includes similar provisions,  so you get each cause followed by its duration as certified by the medico or coroner.  .... so half way round the planet and the order is similar...  but six weeks labour - very very sad...

I'm coming around to the thought that it is most likely to be what we used to call a threatened abortion (incomplete miscarriage) or maybe a placenta praevia, but 6 weeks is a long time.

What time frame was it?

Thanks for your discussions.

I have identified a ittigitimate birth in March 1/4 STOCKILL, TOM       -
GRO Reference: 1872  M Quarter in PICKERING  Volume 09D  Page 396

He is clearly illegitimate and no marriage has been identified.

However the child appears to have survived and I would have though they would have died if 6 weeks in labour - so possibly the wrong birth.

Mother Ann Eliza Stockill 1851 - 1872 pickering yorkshire, illegitimate daughter of Jane Stockill 1822 - 1858

I have 2 birth certs. that could relate to this. sorry death certs.

My gt gt grandfather had cancer and was operated on,  his death cert. reads that his death was caused by the cancer but states operation 12 days. I read it as 12 days prior to the death he was operated on.

My grandparents lost a son prior to my mother's birth, we knew the details, he had a strangulated hernia. On his death cert. it has that as the cause and also operation 1 day. I know he was operated on the day before he died.

I would read yours as she had a baby 6 weeks previous as part of the reason she died as she seems to have been in poor health already and had acute TB for the last 4 weeks of her life.
