occupancy of High House Monkton 1920s & 1930s.
« on: Saturday 06 July 19 23:34 BST (UK) »
Hi people,

Minnie McIntosh appears in the 1939 register living in High House Jarrow which I presume is the same as the High House in Monkton.

My Coulson ancestors were living in High House 1914-1922. Minnie Mcintosh is their cousin.
Is it possible that the tenancy (or ownership) of the house was passed directly from the Coulson family to the Mcintosh family in 1922 and that we may find evidence of the Mcintosh's living there between 1922 and 1939?

I was thinking it might be possible to determine this by looking for the names John & Minnie Mcintosh in the electoral rolls for the 1920s-1930s.

Any help or guidance appreciated.

-David C

Have you not yet looked at the electoral rolls you mention or have you checked availability at the records office?

What was Minnie's full birthdate and was she married as I can't see the 1939 entry you mention

1939 data:
[]
High House, Jarrow M.B., Durham, England
Elizabeth M   McIntosh   1889
1 more person is on the record
1 more person who is officially closed
[]

She is Elizabeth Minnie McIntosh nee Waister.

There is no birth record for her, which is strange because birth data exists for her siblings.
I suspect she may have been adopted.

She appears with her parents & siblings in 1901 and 1911.

Born 1889 according to 1939 Reg and according to censuses.

By trial and error it should be possible to extract her precise birth date from 1939 data.

Sorry I don't have a current FindMyPast subscription that would allow me to view records.

I see a great number of index references to John Mcintosh in Cty Durham 1920-30s.

No wonder I couldn’t find her as Minnie McIntosh ::)

She was born Elizabeth M Waister but married McIntosh

So if she was a Waister cousin to the Coulson’s - why would the tenancy pass to her husbands family?

Perhaps the house was owned by one of these families and let out to the other?
Not sure. But if related families live in the same house in different decades it strikes me as an unusual coincidence and may tell us something about the relationship between these families.

Tracked down Elizabeth Minnie's misspelled birth record

Births Mar 1889   (>99%)
Waster    Elizabeth Minnie        S. Shields

She was Minnie on her marriage record:

Marriages Jun 1914   (>99%)
Waister    Minnie    McIntosh    S.Shields

1939 reg gives her birth date as Jan 29 1889.

Whoops... and before we get too carried away with this... here is a previous discussion we had, a year ago, in which the 1923 tenants of High House were named.

I would still like to have an idea of when the Mcintosh family moved into High House.
