Start with yourself and work backwards

Write down as much information as you already have about your parents, your grandparents and your grandparents' parents......

Good advice here... https://www.irish-genealogy-toolkit.com/irish-roots.html
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

Buy a book about the basics or borrow one from your library. Watch videos on youtube about how to get started. Ask your family about what they know, but always verify everything that they tell you using records. Do it one step at a time verifying facts and adding source documentation as you go. Familiarise yourself with the sites that offer birth, marriage and death records and census information as these will be your starting point. You can learn about other useful record types after you have got an understanding of how these work. Always document where you found evidence so that you can go back and check your information later if you neeed to.

Good luck and have fun  :)

Hello Jools59 and welcome to RootsChat :)

Which country/county/state/province did your family come from, and where do you live now?  The availability of records varies from place to place.

Welcome to Rootschat.

My advice would be:
1) start with the known and work backwards (sounds obvious!)
2) record your findings (copies of documents or notes of sources)
3) ask for help when needed (Rootschat is great!)
4) don't buy subscriptions for paysites until you need them (it can get expensive)
5) explore free sites such as FamilySearch first
5) don't automatically trust online trees or family legends unless you can prove the entries from original sources
6) most important - enjoy the journey

Philip
