Malling Riggs, Sunderland

Hi all,

Can anyone tell me where Malling Riggs, Sunderland is in relation to part of Sunderland called Bishopwearmouth?

Bishopwearmouth was not part of Sunderland. The parish of Sunderland was formed from Bishopwearmouth in 1719.

I was aware that Bishopwearmouth was the forerunner to modern Sunderland, I only linked Bishopwearmouth to Sunderland to indicate what part of the UK I was referring to. Sorry for any confusion.

There is a street called Maling Park in Sunderland which you can find on Google Maps. It is on the western edge of Sunderland on the south side of the Wear. Might be worth a look to see if it might have derived its name from Malling Riggs.

Malings Rigg Presbyterian Chapel, Sunderland

This congregation originally started around the 1770s in rooms in Ropery Lane and was Independent. The Minister at that time , Mr. Heslop, succeeded in building a larger chapel at Malings Rigg. He left around 1791 and was replaced by John Bailey who was a Scotch Presbyterian, the denomination the chapel then remained. The chapel is now closed.

Maling’s Rigg is named after William Maling of Hendon Lodge, who settled in Sunderland in 1723 where he became a ship owner and timber merchant. Rigg is an old name for a ridge or furrow, or strip of plough land, a portion of land of indeterminate area. The 1777 Rate Book shows it as “Malings Ridge”,  it was later developed by William’s son John.

See my reply #6, it was probably named after John or William Maling.  The name was Maling's Rigg not Malling Riggs
