51st regiment
« on: Monday 08 July 19 11:45 BST (UK) »
Hello

My ancestor, John White, joined the 51st Regiment. He was born in Scotland in 1774. He later became an officer, without purchase, in 1805.

Is there any record of his joining in 1790. A relative, now dead, said he joined in 1790. But have no documentary evidence to support this. Would be grateful for help.

He doesn't appear in the list of officers of the regiment in the history

Don't know what they consist of but the KOYLI museum may have something:

Download this one which may refer to his early service if he is in it

Thank you Max.

We do know he joined in 1790. However his commission as an officer in 1805 was with another regiment in Ceylon. A relative has a note of his half pay record from 1828.

We are trying to find his signing record in 1790.

Understood.

You may very well have seen the National Archives guide which notes that if they exist, records should be on FindMyPast or Ancestry which you have no doubt scoured.  Worth looking at what they say about records that weren't kept over the years.

The muster book for the period is at:
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C2466016, he should be in there but you need to look at it/get someone to look at it at Kew.
