Collins family
« on: Monday 08 July 19 19:55 BST (UK) »
Hi all , I recently received the birth certificate for my grandad Patrick Henry A Collins which lists his
Parents as Henry Collins and Elizabeth Matilda Collins so I was on the right track. But I’m having problems finding Henry Collins parents. on Ancestry uk and find my past they list different ones ?

Henry Collins 1887-1938 born in Stepney London uk
One father listed as John Joseph Collins 1831-1889 in Kerry Ireland

Then on another site listed father as Henry Collins 1851-1910 born in st George Southwark england

So I was wondering how to find the correct one ? Any suggestions please .

Hi,

What is the occupation of P.H.A Collins' father on his birth cert?

Have you found the Collins family on the 1911?

You need to work backwards step by step.

From Patrick Henry A Collins' birth certificate you will have his mother's maiden name. In fact that can also be found in the GRO index for Sep qtr 1907, and it's Sullivan.

Next look for a marriage of Henry Collins and Elizabeth Matilda Sullivan, which according to FreeBMD was in the Stepney district in Jun qtr 1901. This marriage certificate should give the names of their fathers.

(This method isn't entirely foolproof, since if Elizabeth Matilda Sullivan had been married before, the maiden name on PHAC's birth certificate wouldn't match the one she married Henry with.)

As well as looking at births, marriages and deaths, try to find your folk in censuses. You should be able to find your grandfather and his parents in 1911, and with the parents' ages and places of birth you may be able to find them in earlier censuses with their own parents.

Another caveat: if they go back to Ireland, things can get a bit harder, but do what you can in England first and then ask again about how to track them in Ireland.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Marriage -

Elizabeth Matilda Sullivan, 22
7 Apr 1901, St Matthew, Limehouse Fields, Tower Hamlets
Father - Patrick Sullivan
Spouse - Henry Collins, 25, Fireman
Spouse's father - Henry Collins, Dock Labourer

Therefore it would appear that Henry's father was Henry.

Thanks to both of you 😁 I did found them on the 1911 census. On my grandads birth certificate he’s dad Henry is a general labourer so did he leave the firemen’s job 6 years later by the time Patrick Henry A Collins my grandad was born ? . I did found a record of the marriage between Henry Collins and Elizabeth Matilda Collins online but didn’t list their parents , do I need to order that certificate now too , many thanks again 😁
