Death records Durban area

I need information on how to look up and obtain a death record for an ancester I belived died in South Africa c1884 - 1890 possible the Durban area, is there a national data base or is it more area based? Any guidence would help try to find this individual.

Thank you for the offer, however the family story about my ancestor running of to South Africa and dying has turned out to all be family fabrication. Further recent investigation and confirmation through DNA has established he ran off to America and lived a reasonable long life.
