An observation would be that if the workhouse record was related to you on this site, it won't have been deleted, so go look for it!

If you know all about Robert, you can tell everyone where he should be in 1841.
Maybe then YOU can look too.

There is absolutely no need for this kind of sarcasm, PaulineJ - if you want to help then do so, if you don't there is no need for comments like this!

Annette

I really don't know why some people are like that.  You never know who you are actually being rude to, so it is best to always be polite and helpful.

Gosh -- this really is a mystery case! Unfortunately I am out today so can't investigate further at the moment -- but JonW -- I had no idea Workhouse Records were on Family Search -- thank you for that information.

I'm wondering how Catherine can have a 10 year old son aged 10 with one surname and another illegitimate son named Day - also aged 10.

Very odd.

Could this be Catherine's marriage to Mr Mills?

Catherine Hunter
Robert Mills
Q3 1855 Poplar (1c 1100)

It fits with her being CM when they are admitted to the workhouse - and puts them in London?

Although the Hunter boys were easy enough to find in Plymouth on the GRO index, the Day's don't seem to be under that name or the name Hunter - anywhere - though I will keep trying!

Agree with Pennines - it's an interesting mystery!

Liz

ADDED - actually I don't think this is the correct couple as I think they have a child Frances baptised in June 1856 (Edmonton) and appear with her and a couple of other children in 1861 ... and the WH record says Caroline (sic) is "widow of Robert tinman"??

Thanks all for your ongoing help and support. I tried to access workhouse records on familysearch, as I am a member, but couldn’t find them. There are a few deaths in the Greenwich area that may be the boys and Mrs Mills. I suppose I need to find out if they left the workhouse and someone get a location for the birth of the Day boys.
Thanks again

Hi,

I have just found the death of Robert Mills - husband of Catherine in Q4 1855 in and now think that the marriage I found in 1855 was the right one because there were actually two marriages of  Robert Mills to a Catherine - the census refers to the other marriage!

So, in summary, Catherine Hunter married Robert Mills in Q3 1855 Poplar, Robert dies a couple of months later in Q4 1855 Greenwich and she ends up in the workhouse in January 1856 with her children. (Such a sad story  :'( )

Here is the link for the workhouse ... https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS1R-79Q4-F?i=529&cat=1223449

you need to go to the next page as well for the comments.

I will have another look for the birth of Day boys when I get home - have to take Mum out now!

Liz

Thanks for that, crumbs this is a very sad tale. I wonder what happened to the baby and her, well apart from her son Richard who died in an asylum (possibly, information provided on rootschat) I don’t really know what happened to any of them. I still wonder whether the first two children belonged to one of her late sisters.

I've been watching with interest & I'm impressed with what's been found so far.
I didn't know IGI had these records either so decided to take a look.
I notice under the child Mills is a John Mills aged 56 also being admitted on the same day.
Described as sick & destitute, occ. blacksmith, wayfaring, I take it this means he's not from the area.
Am I muddying the waters ?
