Can anyone at the Records office check a baptism for me?
« on: Wednesday 10 July 19 14:06 BST (UK) »
I am researching the Horsman / Horseman surnames,  and have a list of baptisms from Oxfordshire FHS, which includes one at Caversham.
Can anyone visiting the Records Office spare a few minutes to check the entry out.
The year is 1832, place: Caversham
The childs name is Sarah Horsman, and her parents are Daniel and Sarah.

Daniel was an uncommon Hors(e)man name,  so knowing his occupation and residence would be very useful.

Thanks

Sue

Hi Sue,

While I was at the Berkshire records yesterday I checked the baptisms for St Peter Caversham 1832, sorry to say there was no record of a Sarah daughter of Daniel and Sarah Horsman/Horseman recorded in this parish register.

Kind regards
Chris

Many thanks for looking.  At least I know its not there,  but it all adds to the mystery.

I have Caversham St Peter PRs on CD and the Sarah Horsman baptism is there - not sure why it didn't show up at the local RO. Not much additional info, I'm afraid:

8 April 1832 Sarah Horsman d/o Daniel, labourer & Sarah

it looks like the only Horsman baptism in the index.
HELP!!!

 BATHSHEBA BOOTHROYD bn c. 1802 W. Yorks.

Baptism nowhere to be found. Possibly in a nonconformist church near ALMONDBURY or HUDDERSFIELD.

Sorry if I made a mistake (might have had a senior moment!) but when I looked at the parish register I thought I saw a baptism for a child (don't remember the name) of John and Mary Horsman and then immediately underneath a Sarah daughter of Daniel and Sarah (surname possibly Wells) and I discounted these records, I then continued to check the rest of 1832 for Sarah daughter of Daniel & Sarah Horsman and didn't find one.

Jillruss, please can you check your CD to seen if there is a baptism record for either a Sarah daughter of Daniel & Sarah Wells or a child of John & Mary Wells?

Name is indexed as Hasman on FamilySearch. From the BT. Does look somewhat like that!
Sarah, parents John + Mary.

please can you check your CD to seen if there is a baptism record for either a Sarah daughter of Daniel & Sarah Wells or a child of John & Mary Wells?

Yes, you are right, it is the next entry, Sarah daugr. of Daniel + Sarah Wells. Father a Gardener.

A mix up of some kind there? And a bit of a surprise that it can be viewed at home!

Maybe not (a Wells mix up)
Sarah Wells buried Caversham, 30 June 1833, age 15 months.
Daniel + Sarah Wells there in 1841

Many thanks to you all.  its a great relief that Daniel and Sarah were Wells, not Hors(e)man. Equally I dont think that the Hasman entry is a bad transcript of Hors(e)man.  The surname was not common in that area.
However - seeing the image on Family search was interesting.  I'll have a better look there, as BRK hasnt got good online coverage elsewhere.
