Brock family of Orkney
« on: Thursday 11 July 19 12:04 BST (UK) »
Hi

My Brock ancestors were living in Sanday when the 1841 Census was held.  At that time, there were over 40 Brocks in Orkney.  This number had dwindled to single figures by 1911 (my own Brocks had moved to Leith by that time).

I remember my late aunt telling me that the family had originally moved to Orkney from Holland, but I have yet to unearth any evidence of that.  The Cursitor website has enabled me to trace my Brock lineage as far back as (Mr) Sutherland Brock, in the early 19th century.

Can anyone add to the Holland story?

I think you've mis-spelt the website: http://www.cursiter.com/

I can't see this Sutherland Brock to see exactly what record it  is and when?

Hibee, there are places called Holland in Orkney!  ;D

My own folk were from Eday/North Ronaldsay & likewise ended up in Leith plus working on the Forth Bridge!

Skoosh....I see Holland on Stronsay.  It appears to consist of a farmhouse and a cemetery.  I wonder whether there is a list of burials anywhere?

I'd imagine that there would be.

Perhaps Scotland's people would be the place to start looking?

Hibee, I had a Smith ancestor from Stronsay, apparently they're looking for settlers! Black's "Surnames!" says Brock was a common name in Edinburgh, which figures?

Thanks, Skoosh.  Edinburgh Brocks climb from 19 in 1841 to a peak of about 70 around the turn of the century.  It's almost as if they were all on the move from Orkney to Edinburgh.  Don't know how Black can call it a common surname, though.
