The Brock family on the 1821 census in Stromness, doesnt give a place of birth,Sutherland Brock and Margaret Cormack had 8 children between 1789 - 1806. Another spelling of Brock could be Brough, ( still some living in Orkney )

Theres a marriage on Scotlands People for Sutherland Broke to Effy Inkster in Orphir on 2/4/1816, they both went on to have at least 7 children

Even before Scotland got Orkney & Shetland from Denmark in the 15th century, in place of a dowry which was never paid, east coast Scots have been settling in the isles. The present population in Orkney is maybe 50/50 in origin?  An Edinburgh origin for Brock would be no surprise therefore but certainly the fishery there was largely developed by the Dutch & their fleet of busses appeared every season, they say Amsterdam is built on herring bones, Scottish herring bones!

As an aside, it's interesting Skoosh to read this as I have the surname 'Work' in my tree (not direct line) who was Orcadian & I have always thought it was a variant of a foreign name e.g. Werk or similar?

There are at least three Hollands in Orkney and four Houllands in Shetland, besides others elsewhere in Scotland, so moving 'from Holland' need not mean 'moving from one of the provinces of the Netherlands'.

Annie, according to Black, the name Work is from the lands of that name in St Ola, also found in Shetland.
