In 1900-01, 51 Nicolson Street was apparently a tobacconist shop

The maps don't show any sign of a lying in hospital.

Nicolson Street is the wide street running from north to south on the map towards the right hand side.  There was the Royal Blind Asylum nearby.

Not sure this will help but on the VRs 1905 there's 2 Proprietors, Gardner & Stirton & a Tenant Miss Mary Scott.

All 3 are no. 51 & all 3 are 'Shop'

What was the mother's occupation on the BC?

Add...1895 there are a lot more names with same address

Add...She may have been a Lodger at the address i.e. her name wouldn't appear on the VRs

I know Nicolson Street a bit, is this a tenement with shops on the ground floor?

In modern terms, 51, 51a and 53 Nicolson Street form a tenement building. 51 and 53 are ground-floor shops. 51a is a tenement over the shops, with one house on each of three storeys. It is possible that 51a was originally 51 (same as the shop).
