Burroughs side of family
« on: Sunday 21 July 19 21:33 BST (UK) »
Hi can anyone help me here regarding the Burroughs side of my family. My father was William Burroughs born on Portsmouth 1902. His parents who I never heard much about were Edward Burroughs and his wife Sarah. I believe her maiden name was Magney, I have no details about these grand parents at all as my father never spoke of them. I would love to know where the Magney family came from and when mt Grandad Edward died and if he and his wife came from large familys from the Portsmouth area. Any information I really would appreciate. Gerry

Would your father actually have been Charles William Burroughs?
There is a 9-year old boy of that name on the 1911 census living in Portsmouth with his parents
Edward John aged 30 b. Shoreham, Sussex, occupation General Hawker,  and Sarah Louisa aged 26 b. Portsea.

The first Problem I encountered is the birth registration of your father.
On FreeBMD 1900 - 1903 there is only one in Hampshire for a Charles Burroughs, none for a William/Charles
Charles Burroughs Sept 1/4 registration district Portsmouth vol 2b page 495 Mother's maiden name Hammond.
I cannot find a marriage of a Burrough* and Magn*y anywhere anytime on FreeBMD.
There are only two marriages for a Sarah Magn*y anytime anywhere. One in 1912 to a Richard T Richards and the other in Dec 1/4 1896 to either a George Francis or a Edward Michael McCayna
Where did you get the information about Sarah Magney and Edward John?

Hi Jennifer, thank you for your replies. As I mention earlier my dad never really spoke about his mother and father to me. Any information I got was from my mother and I thought she said the it was a Sarah Magney but since she has died many years ago I am only going by memory. So this information is really new to me. One other bit of information which I remember was that a Burroughs name is on the WW1 war memorial in Portsmouth and as I live in Belfast I have no way of verifying that information.

I found them years ago on the Ancestry website and the names were on the 1911 census for Portsmouth.
