Suicide notes
« on: Tuesday 23 July 19 08:00 BST (UK) »
Hello,

My Grandfather was illegitimate and I believe his father committed suicide. So I have no links to
the family( although I believe he may have visited them once as a boy.)
Does anyone know how you get a Coroners report and would this contain a suicide note if there was one or would it have been destroyed? This was in 1925.

Thankyou
Marytm

Do you have the death certificate which would give cause of death.  Have you looked in newspapers

Hello,

I haven't got the death certificate but I have his Will and probate details saying he was last seen
on 11th March and found dead on 15th March 1925 in a wood. I suspect hanging?
I was also told his death was to do with my Great Grandmother marrying someone else but this was in 1922.

I would very much like to get in touch with any descendant's but I am not sure if they would be happy with this?

Oh and I did look for newspapers .It took place in Cheadle (? Staffordshire)
but I haven't found anything. I wasn't sure if it would be hushed up?
I couldn't find his grave in Oakamoor either.

The death certificate will show if an inquest was held and will give the name of the Coroner. You could then contact the relevant county archives to ask if they hold the file;  not all files survive.  It might be restricted by a time closure ….75 or 100 years.

Three of my ancestors were subjects of an inquest but I've only found one file.....better than nothing.

I have a suicide that also took place in the woods after going missing, that was briefly mentioned in the local papers. The death certificate does give a date of the inquest as well as naming the coroner.  I have not tried to get any further information on this, it happened more recently than yours.

I have ordered a Death Certificate so hopefully I may be able to find the coroner's details as nanny Jan said.

If there was an inquest the Coroner's details will be on the certificate.
