Ive just had a look at the COI records and see that it says for Ahoghill where the Spences are found that records exist. Ill try contacting PRONI.

Apart from the Griffiths valuation I haven't found a lot else until the official record keeping began. Im surprised that the early parish records weren't destroyed in 1922.

I hope you have some good luck with the Irish records. I'm afraid I can't help you there....have never had a need to use them.

It looks like Nancy Spence Beaty died in 1878 leaving behind a very young family. I suspect Mary and Jane would have been a big help with caring for the little ones.

Back to that head stone...
Assuming that James and Mary are the correct couple, and that the dates are wrong, I was wondering if direct contact with the cemetery might turn up a burial record even though it was so long ago, assuming they are still maintaining an office. Grasping at straws  :).

PB

Added: this link related to the cemetery indicates that it was only established in 1891 so perhaps James and Margaret (Mary?) were simply added to the memorial stone? Darn.

That could explain the 'mistake' in the headstone. A much later generation remembered the name of thier ancestor incorrectly?
