Samuel Beesley - Livery Stable Keeper, Oxford 1830's and onward
« on: Thursday 25 July 19 09:52 BST (UK) »
I am intrigued by a Samuel Beesley, Livery Stable Keeper,  who, in Pigot's 1830 is recorded in St Mary Hall Lane, Oxford.  I think I also find him in 1842 Pigot's in Brewer Street and son(?) in Bear Lane.

In 1833 Samuel Beesley takes over the share of a Fly and Wagon Office in Jesus College Lane, Oxford from George Kimber with the Livery Office in St Mary Hall Lane (Oxford Journal 31 Aug 1833) forming Beesley, Gilbert & Co.

BUT - I cannot find a suitable Samuel Beesley in the 1841 census for Oxford, I'm looking for a related occupation.  I am sure I must be missing something obvious.  He could be living a little distant from the Livery, of course.

I am not sure how to find St Mary Hall Lane, Brewer Street or Bear Lane in the Oxford 1841 census  - Can anyone help with that?

Pam

Can't work out how to search by address   >:( but by searching for Beesley and Keyword = Bear I have found a Richard Beesley, b 1821,  in 'Called Bear Lane' but cannot read/interpret his occupation, seems to be in a Bookseller's household.  Haven't looked for the other locations yet.

Yes, I have wondered about the 1796 Samuel in Headington, seems a bit affluent perhaps??

and the 1821 Horse keeper Samuel <could> be his son (as in 1842 Pigot's). Both within walking/riding distance of Oxford.

If only there was better data from the early 1800's !!!!

I'll keep looking....

Thanks

Baptism in 1820 names Samuel with parents Samuel & Elizabeth - St Mary Hall Lane, fathers occ Horse dealer.

Samuel the Farmer in 1841 has sons George, Alfred, Henry & James with him. The baptisms of the first three all name mother as Elizabeth - abode St Mary Hall Lane -Fathers occ Horse Dealer

If you want to see these locations on modern maps, Brewer Street and Bear Lane still exist.  St Mary Hall Lane was renamed Oriel Street when the Hall became Oriel College.

Oriel is just round the corner from Bear, and Brewer is a few minutes away on foot.
