Does anyone know a good place to look for archive photos. My ancestors were sporting champions and actors/actresses in the theatre so there are lots of newspaper articles but no photos. I dont want to pay fees for access to sites that may produce no results.

Hi,
Do you have a local studies library with an archive? Plymouth and West Devon archives have loads of photos that can be accessed. I found a photo of my grandfather who was a rugby player in their archive. At least then you can purchase the photo should you wish.

I’m in rural Australia so no access to major libraries. Would have to an online site. Events took place around the world but I’m particularly interested in 1900-1910.

Try googling local history groups in the towns where your interest lies; or even the town/city councils. They often have online archive images, which are not just of localities but often include events and people of note.
