Seeking Jacobs in London
« on: Sunday 28 July 19 12:06 BST (UK) »
I have three problems which are the disappearance of Hyman Jacobs (b 1834 Poland) after the 1861 census? Secondly, which Rebecca/Rebekah Jacobs lived with Philip Jacobs at 14 Artillery Passage?
Thirdly, what could be the relationship between Philip Jacobs & Hyman Jacobs? Also could Isaac Jacobs be the brother to Hyman.
Also could anyone give me the address of the nearest Synagogue to Hutchinson ave, st Boltolph?

I have found
1861 Census: 10 Hutchinson Ave, St Botolph
Hyman Jacobs Head age 27 Glazier Born Poland
Harriett Jacobs wife age 28 born Poland
Rebecca Jacobs dau 10 months Born Aldgate St Botolph

1861 Census No 9 Hutchinson Ave St Botolph
Isaac Jacobs head married age 30 tailor born Poland
Esther Jacobs wife married age 26 born Poland
Elizabeth Jacobs dau age 6 born St Botolph
Jacob Jacobs son age 4 scholar born St Botolph

Simon Jacobs age 12 ".    "

Samuel Jacobs age 1.  ".  "

1881 Census At George in the East

Isaac Jacobs age 50 Tailor b Poland
Esther Jacobs age 50 b Poland
Marks Jacobs age 19 b London
Amelia Jacobs age 15 b    "
Dora Jacobs age 13 b.      "
Sammy Jacobs age 11 b   "
Fanny Jacobs age 8 b.      "
Mosy Jacobs age 6 b       "
Henry Jacobs age 4 b.    "
Henrietta Seeley age 16 b London Servant.

Marriage July 2nd 1883 of John Jacobs (son of Hyman) and Rebecca/Rebekah (aka Adelaide nee Winslow).

John Jacobs, son of Hyman & Harriett Jacobs of 2 Raymore Place, Heneage Street London, Father Hyman occupation not given.
Adelaide Winslow (aka Rebecca)
dau of William & Elizabeth Winslow, of 14 Artillery Passage, London. Married John Jacobs son of Hyman & Harriett (Michla) Jacobs

This is all the information I have other than Hyman & Isaac's father may be Jacob Jacobs.

The link to Artillery passage is quite interesting as a Philip Jacobs owned 14 Artillery passage. Could Rebecca/Rebekah have either worked or lived at this address and as she was marrying John Jacobs son of Hyman, which could be a relative of Philip Jacobs, and was allowed to stay at 14 Artillery Passage or was it Hyman's daughter Rebecca who lived with Philip, as I have two Rebecca/Rebekah's associated with Hyman Jacobs.

Can anyone who has a A* membership ( a well-known website) contact a member called Fianna2001, she is researching the same family as above

A lot of questions here for a single post.

the disappearance of Hyman Jacobs (b 1834 Poland) after the 1861 census?

To start it off, I think this is your Hyman Jacobs’ death ...

JACOBS Hyam, aged 30
Q2 1864
East London 1c 6

The GRO births index shows the daughter Rebecca’s mother’s maiden name as Friedman, so ‘Hyman’ is probably the Hyam Jacobs who married Harriet Friedman at the Great Synagogue in 1857. The marriage transcript, with father's name, is here ...

http://synagoguescribes.com/blog/person-details/?value=8376
(Click on Harriet’s name to see her details and her father’s name)

Possible 1871 (you may have this already?)
RG10/416 folio 18 page 29
16 Artillery Lane, Bishopsgate, London [multi-occupancy dwelling]
Hanah Jacobs, head, widow, 41, Work Woman, born Russe Poland
Rebbaca Jacobs, daughter, unmarried, 10, born City of London
Jacob Jacobs, son, unmarried, 9, born City of London

Hannah could have been Harriet’s name before anglicization. Nobody born in Russian Poland at that date would originally have been called Harriett.

I cannot thank you enough, I have been searching for so long.
So that explains where Hyman disappeared too. So they arrive from Poland 1858-1860 & within 4 years Hyman dies.

Could you find marriage of Sarah b1858 Poland?
Many thanks

No. They arrived in or before 1857, when they married in London (see above). If we have the right person, Hyman died in 1864 (see above).

Not without more information, as she doesn't appear to be referenced in your first post.

There is a Sarah Jacobs born Poland age 13 in 1871.

Father Simon
Mother Adelaide

is that the Sarah you mean?

In 1901 she is Sarah Silver a widow so she must have married between 1891-1901.
