Wife of murderer
« on: Tuesday 30 July 19 11:17 BST (UK) »
Hello, I am researching a book and am trying to trace a person whose husband was executed for murder during the war. I would appreciate any tips anyone can offer because I've reached a dead end. I have her birth details and marriage certificate, but can find no trace of her after the war – no details of remarrying, or her death. It's as though she disappeared – any ideas about avenues I might check out? Many thanks

Can you locate her on 1939. Any name change recorded?

She may have emigrated and/or changed her name.
Where in the world was she located/from?
Also which war?

I have a person that seems to have disappeared also. She changed her name by deed-poll in the 1960s. However when she remarried she gave her father's real name which meant I found her for a short period but she disappeared again in the mid 1970s.

Depending on what country you are searching in you could look for her through her maiden name.
More recent UK death records can be searched using a date of birth which would be more difficult to change.

As her husband is dead you can name him on this site which would give a start point for some one to search for you who may be interested.

Thanks for the speedy replies
I haven't found on the 1939 Census. This was the WW2 in the UK. I have tried finding her under her maiden name and am now checking whether she may have adopted her mother's maiden name. I suppose emigration may be the next route to investigate…

1939 Register was taken as war was declared and used for ration cards, later used by the NHS so was updated until 1991 with name changes and deaths. You can use her DOB on Find My Past to help find her on the 1939 Register.

Thanks. I have looked for her on the 39 Register under her maiden and married names (married in 1936) but can't find her. I've also tried the addresses I have for 1936 and 1942 but again nothing. I know people moved around a lot at the time, but this couple seemed to have dodged the census completely.

I can also find no subsequent marriages under her maiden or married names. Seeing as she was only in her 20s when her husband was executed, that seems a little unusual, unless she was traumatised by her marriage. So, I'm beginning to suspect she took on a new name.

It wasn't a census, it was done due to the war and you needed to be on it to get ration cards. The census before was 1931 the next one was 1951. 1931 census documents were destroyed during WW2.
No census was done during the war.
