Samuel family near Edinburgh
« on: Tuesday 30 July 19 18:25 BST (UK) »
I am researching my grandfather's roots and hoping to make contact with possible relatives in Scotland.

Andrew B Samuel
b. August 30, 1883 Edinburgh
Occupation. Plasterer
Parents. James and Janet Samuel
Emigrated to Cape Breton, Nova Scotia Canada 1902
Occupation. Coal Miner
Married Emma Barry, Port Hood, Nova Scotia on February 07, 1910 in Stellarton, Nova Scotia and lived in Port Hood, Balls Creek and finally settling in New Waterford, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia.
Enlisted and served as a Sergeant and Captain in the Canadian Army March 26, 1915
Died March 13, 1945
Buried at Union Grove Cemetary, Scotchtown, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia (Gravestone says he was born in Glasgow in 1882. Military documents shows born in Edinburgh in 1883).

We were contacted by phone in the 80's by Ronnie Samuel who I believe was his nephew in Edinburgh, Scotland.

Any information, potential relatives, contacts, photos, etc would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

-Rich Samuel

I am pleased to report that I have made contact with a cousin in Scotland. Our grandfathers were brothers. He accidentally found my RootsChat post on google. We chat almost daily through WhatsApp and plan to visit each other post-covid. I am also in contact with other 2nd cousins in Scotland, and one each in Germany and Australia.

I was also able to track down one photo of my granda. It's a group military photo taken just before the Battle of Hill 70 in France during the Great War. (He is pictured here top row, far right). So the search continues for more.

I'd like to thank each and every one of you on RootsChat for being so kind and helpful, especially Ryan who has become a life-long friend. We also chat daily and plan to visit as well.

Thanks again,
