Spenceley & Kirby Misperton Parish Registers
« on: Wednesday 31 July 19 21:01 BST (UK) »
Good Day NRY Rootschatters

Firstly: I am looking for Kirby Misperton Parish Registers prior to 1788. Are they actually missing/destroyed/not for production,  or have they not been filmed?

The information on Family Search and Find My Past only has the Parish Registers from 1788. Either in filmed or index form.

Secondly: I am trying to find the marriages of George Spenceley about 1780 to 1787. He may have married twice. Firstly to Hannah/Ann and secondly to Martha. The BTs indicate some baptisms for children of George but no marriages. Hoped to check the PRs to make sure that the marriages were not omitted from the BTs.

The timeline constructed from Kirby Misperton BTs also PRs after 1787 is:

1782 26 Nov Bapt William s/o George Spenceley of E. Barugh
1785 6 Mar   Bapt Hannah d/o George and Hannah Spenceley Little Barf
1786 29 Apr Burial Anne Spenceley of Kirby Misperton
1787 27 Nov Bapt Jane d/o George and Martha Spenceley  Little Barf
1790 19 Oct Bapt Rachel d/o George and Martha Spenceley Labourer of Little Baugh (sic)
1798 25 Mar Bapt Martha d/o George and Martha Spenceley Lab. Little Baugh (sic)

Does anybody know this family?  Not sure about Anne's death at Kirby but could find no other to explain new wife Martha.
Suspicious gap between Rachel and Martha. Did the family move away and then return?
Have not found a death for George or Martha.
Rachel Spenceley married John Wiles at Holme on the Wolds in 1811.

Thanks for reading.
Any information or suggestions gratefully received.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.
Remember - "They'll be found when they want to be found" !!!

Thanks for responding Tickettyboo and Bumble Bee.

I had looked at Genuki but the information was exactly the same as Family Search and Find My Past. I was hoping someone on the ground in North Yorkshire may have already found out why there are no PRs earlier than 1788 had the information to hand without my having to contact the Record Office.

Usually PRs don't start to get gaps or disappear until the 1600s unless some catastrophe occurs. In this case I have been informed by the record office there was a fire.

This is a shame because the Bishop's Transcripts of marriages were not a full transcript. Very often details present in the PR were not recorded on the BT.

In the case of Kirby Misperton the Marriage BTs up to 1781 had names, his occupation, her marital condition, residence of both parties, date and method (Banns or Licence)

In 1782 there is a change in the recorder. He records names, date and method. Witnesses were rarely recorded in the BTs.

So I'm still looking for the marriage of George Spenceley/Spencelay/Spensley and Martha which, according to my timeline above, must have occurred in 1786 or 1787. It is not in the BTs but there is always that nagging feeling - it could have been omitted.

The link that BumbleB posted to the record office catalogue search gives the answer.

Search for Kirby Misperton and scan down the results and you will see entries for PRs
the first has this in the description
[Registers pre 1788 destroyed by fire- see Bishop's Transcripts, York]

Well Ticketty they have been very quick in adding that as I made the suggestion on a feedback form yesterday and received two emails overnight informing me about the fire and stating they will be adding a note about why the PRs are missing.

I hadn't checked to see if they had put up the additional information but I did try and get a thank you message to the staff who handled this before they finished work today.  Not sure if I was in time because I'm five hours behind the UK and a late riser.

Have a good weekend everybody.

Although this is an old post, just want to record that images of BTs for Kirby Misperton are accessible via FindMyPast

Hi ramjo

Thank you for that information. I have just had a look and although there were some Spencely marriages there are none for George in the time frame I am interested in.

He must have married elsewhere.
