Bethnal Green was a hamlet in the 17th century and not an obvious magnet for people coming all the way from the West Country.  Who is the earliest Lovell ancestor you have traced with confidence in the London area, and how have you made the leap from there to earlier Dorset/Somerset ancestry?
Ayr: Barnes, Wylie
Caithness: MacGregor
Essex: Eldred (Pebmarsh)
Gloucs: Timbrell (Winchcomb)
Hants: Stares (Wickham)
Lincs: Maw, Jackson (Epworth, Belton)
London: Pierce
Suffolk: Markham (Framlingham)
Surrey: Gosling (Richmond)
Wilts: Matthews, Tarrant (Calne, Preshute)
Worcs: Milward (Redditch)
Yorks: Beaumont, Crook, Moore, Styring (Huddersfield); Middleton (Church Fenton); Exley, Gelder (High Hoyland); Barnes, Birchinall (Sheffield); Kenyon, Wood (Cumberworth/Denby Dale)

I'm assuming you've probably got your information from an online tree/trees which I'm afraid is/are wrong especially with regard to John Lovell.

Yes, a John Lovell was bp.8/5/1642 St. Andrew, Holborn, son of Edward (Buttermaker) and Margaret.   However, this John Lovell died and was buried the following year!!

John Lovell bur.23/6/1643 St. Andrew, Holborn, son of Edward Lovell, Buttermaker.

So, whoever the John Lovell who married Alice Southin 19/1/1667 St. Bartholomew the Less, London was, he definitely wasn't the one bp.8/5/1642 to Edward and Margaret as that one died as an infant.

(I note from the online trees that both John and Alice's fathers are stated to be named Edward and yet none of their 3 sons bore this name which is very odd for the time).

In fact, looking at the trees I suspect a great deal of the stated facts.   I find it very strange, for instance, that the Robert Lovell bp'd 1715 is said to be the only child born to a Robert Lovell and Mary Payne married in 1693, some 22 years after the marriage.   Sounds very suspect.

Apologies for absence from website. I am confident that robert lovell b.1670 married mary payne in 1693/94. Equally I know that their son Robert b.1715 married Martha Smilten in 1753. If I am correct Edward b. 1622 married margret eaton in 1640. their son john was b.1642 and married alice Southin in 1667. My weakness in Edwards birthplace being in Eastbourne and his father I have accepted at stretch his birth in Wrington, which as you say is in somerset. most of my info is from Family Search and some from Ancestry where I am concerned that there may be one too many edwards i.e did Edward b.1602 marry margret. i am open to suggestions.

Regards

19 Jan 1667 St Bartholomew the Less - John Lovell married Alice Southin.

When did this John die and does it give any indication of his age at death or have you just gone back 25 years to establish a birth date.

Annette has made one very relevant suggestion --that in fact the John who married Alice Southin couldn't have been the son of Edward and Margaret b 1642 --as the latter died in infancy!

So if you're looking to trace the parents of John, you need to work backwards from 1667, not forwards from the 1500s.

John and Alice baptised the following children at St Sepulchre between 1668 - 1675:

John; William; Robert; Prudence; Alice.

Whilst of course they may not have adopted the common naming schemes, I'd be more inclined to look for fathers called John, William or Robert, rather than Edward.
