« on: Friday 02 August 19 19:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,

can anyone tell me which school in East Tilbury, Essex this is ?
I can't read it.

The card was signed in 1941 W.F. Fox (I think) Dioc. Inspr. (don't know what that means)
Wilson: Writtle Essex, Shorne Kent.
Windley: Woodford Essex, Chigwell Essex, Blackmore Essex.
Halls: Chigwell and Woodford, Essex
Ambrose and Corteling: Sri Lanka

A diocese is the area under the charge of a bishop of the Anglican Church, Chelmsford (Essex) in this case.

Apparently there were 2 schools in East Tilbury.  The modern primary school which is on the ‘Bata Estate’. But there was another which was further down the same road towards Coal House Fort.  It was near The Ship Public House.  The Ship is still standing but it’s mostly surrounded by relatively modern houses.  I don’t know when this school closed.

The road was Fort Road but it is now Princess Margaret Road.  If you want further details I could visit the local museum in the next few weeks and see if they have any more information.

Hi Nic,

I would appreciate that. My dad (Jock Windley born 1935 in Dorking) was 6 in 1941. His dad worked at Bata prior to 1940.
Grandad was killed in action at Dunkirk in 1940 during Operation Dynamo.
So I'm very interested in finding out to which school my dad went (and his sister 2 years younger).

I don't know where my dad went to school in 1942, but apperently he went to the Council Junior Mixed School in Stanford-Le-Hope in 1943.
In 1944 he went to the Bata Preparatory School in East Tilbury.
And then… from 1945 or 1946 untill 1950 he went to the Duke of York Royal Military School in Dover.

Thank you.

I will see what I can find out.

My parents are of similar age although they didn’t attend those schools but I’m pretty certain one of their friends went to school in Stanford-le-Hope.  I will see what they know about those schools.

I’ll speak to them next week.

I think the Stanford Children’s Centre on Corringham Road is the site of the Stanford School but I will confirm with my parents.

Do you know where the family were living in 1939?

Hi Nic,

The 1939 England and Wales Register has them living at 25 Bata Avenue (I think), Thurrock
