Hi,

I started my family tree many years ago and had to put it to one side until I could pick it up again.  That time is now!  However, I'm still plagued by an issue that improved technology and searches haven't resolved.

My grandmother was Elfreda (or Alfreda) Mary Esther West nee Prior.  Her father was Edwin James Farlow born c. 1877 d. 1816.  Her mother - who is also on the birth certificates of her brothers, is Ada Martha Ann Belcher.

I can find both Edwin and Ada on the 1881 census I then have a gap until the birth certificate of Edwin James Farlow (known as farlow) is born c. 1899.  I can't find Edwin James Farlow (father) or Ada Martha Ann on the 1891 census (I can see both of them age 14 in the 1881 census) and I can't locate a marriage certificate for them - even though I have other certificates where they have stated husband/wife relationship.  I've also seen some other threads where George and Ada are discussed, but I believe these refer to a previous generation - although they are within the Edwin/Ada part of the family.

Can anyone help me fill in the gaps because I think I've been looking at this too long and very possibly got my links mixed up (did they really need to give every one the same names!!!!!).

You don’t give any locations, though - where did this family live?

When were the known Prior/Belcher children born, other than the c1899 one?

You Edwin  is still with his parents in 1891 census in East Lockinge but he is listed as plain Farlow Prior aged 14

In 1911 Edwin JF is a widower in Reading and in 1901 he is in Wokingham with wife and family. Ada dies in 1904 death registered in Reading district

If Edwin died in 1916 in the Somme there is a medal card for him.

There is a soldier’s will for Edwin on the Find a will government site.

Ada is transcribed as BELLAR on the 1891 (Ancestry)-a servant in Long Wittenham.

This is fab! Thanks for the welcome and keen support.

I have most of the stuff you guys have suggested, although I didn’t have the will or the mis-transcribed name of Bellar. So I’ve now narrowed the gap to about 7 years...1891 to 1898. 

Is there a way people could get married without there being a uk marriage certificate?
