Joseph Davis

The 1881 census shows my ancestor, William Owen, aged 20, as captain of a barge at Springwell, Harefield. With him was one other, Joseph Davis, aged 14, who was described as 'driver'. I've not seen this description before. Can anybody explain it? I would like to find out who Joseph was.

Might he have been driving the horses that pulled the barge?

I think he must have been. I didn't realise it was a separate job :-) I think the Davis family was connected to the Rowbottom family, (Mary Ann who married William Owen in 1881), but I am having trouble finding the connection.

Hi and welcome to RootsChat.

Just a few questions. :)

Have you seen the actual image for the 1881 census?

And I'm at a loss to find a marriage for Rowbottom/Owen in 1881.

Maureen

Hello, Yes I've seen the 1881 census image and the wedding between Mary Ann Rowbottom and William Owen took place on 29 August 1881, Yiewsley. I have worked out though that Joseph Davis is likely to be Joseph Rowbottom, Mary Ann's brother, who must have taken the name of his mother's new husband (his father died in 1874). It's that wedding I'm trying to find!

Found them! What a brilliant moment. I've found the whole family on the Grand Junction Canal in 1881 (except Joseph, who is on the barge with William). Problem solved :-) I don't think Joseph was 14 though...more like 12... Thank you for you help.

 :) :) :)

Great! Sometimes it does help to write it all down and then sit back for a second look.

(Took me forever to find Mary Ann Rewbotter(sic) on the marriage images and as REWBOTTOM on FreeBMD.)

Well done!

Maureen

It's been a nightmare with all the different spellings and a total disregard for given names! I really though this had beaten me and then there it was :-) Thank you so much for looking.
