Donald McPherson 92nd highlanders
« on: Saturday 03 August 19 18:47 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Iím interested in Donald born around 1760-1775 at a guess. He was a private in the 92nd Highlanders. Can anyone find a military record for him?
He was definitely in Gibraltar around 1798 as this is where his daughter Margaret was born, his wife was Isabella.
I am also interested in his son-in-law John Mooney described in one census as an army pensioner. Born Ireland around 1799. Later worked as a servant and porter. Suspect he may have been in the 92nd or 93rd as one of his children was born at Aberdeen.
Thanks

I think the John Mooney in question served with the 88th Regiment from 1815 to 1838 when he was discharged to pension, subsequently living in Edinburgh. Born St Michael's, Limerick circa 1798.

If it's the right man, he had no wife or family by August 1876.

There was a Sergeant Donald McPherson in the 92nd, born Kilgussie, Inverness circa 1774. Discharged to pension in 1814, having lost his left arm as a result of a wound:

Hello - Iíve now had time to go through these records and Iím sure they are both right.
I hadnít been able to find Donaldís record when I looked previously on fold so this is great. Thank you Shaun  ;D
I had found the record for John previously but I hadnít been able to connect it with my John, he only gives his birthplace as Ireland in census records and he never works as a weaver after his time in the army. However, having revisited a marriage record for one of his sons I can see he helpfully gives his fatherís regiment as 88th foot. Now where is the doh emoticon?  ???
Shaun curious as to why you thought it was the record for my John Mooney? Lack of any others as I am doubtful you looked up his sonís marriage on Scotlandís people!

There were only two Irish soldiers named John Mooney with birth year circa 1799 who went to pension. This one lived in Edinburgh which seemed right, having looked at the online tree(s).

Ah ok, im guessing from that the records must be pretty complete in that case?
I havenít been able to find Johnís death. Did he actually have to go to Chelsea or would he have stayed in Edinburgh? His wife had died earlier that year but he still had a son and daughter alive.

He was an out pensioner in Edinburgh until 1876, then admitted to in-pension 1 August 1876 (presumably in Chelsea), then reverted to out-pension from ! September 1876 "not to be readmitted", then readmitted in November.

This pension ledger shows that he was in London in September 1876 then back in Edinburgh in October: https://search.findmypast.co.uk/record?id=GBM%2FWO23%2F60%2F00397&parentid=GBM%2FWO23%2F60%2F00397%2F1311239

This is the 1876 record that says "no wife and family":

Oh my goodness he got around, that wouldnít have been a quick journey in those days. Thanks for that I had no idea those records existed shame they donít mention about him passing away!
