Plews / Bowman families
« on: Sunday 04 August 19 08:43 BST (UK) »
Hi

I am trying to trace my family and have found a great grandmother Margaret Plews b. 1859 in Constable Burton, N. Yorkshire. She had two sons Harry & Ernest before emmigrating to South Africa where she had a further three children Annie, Helen, Frank. She died 1922 in Durban.

I recently found a death notice for her which listed her parents as Robert and Margaret Plews and her husband as Samuel Bowman.

I am looking for any information on her parents who were presumably also from the Constable Burton or possibly Leyburn area and on her husband as I can find no other reference to him anywhere.

Many thanks in advance.

Cheryl B

That gives a marriage location at Harrogate.
I'll have a good look there.

Where did the information of the birth place (Constable Burton)  for Margaret come from?

Was it from this census in 1881? if so this could be the daughter of James and Barbara Plews:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:Q27B-PQW5

Is this your Margaret in the 1891 census (birth place only recorded as Yorkshire):
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:7JZB-3PZ

There is this marriage:

Marriages Dec 1867
ATKINSON    John William P        Ripon    9a   118
HUTCHINSON    Phillis         Ripon    9a   118
Plews    Robert         Ripon    9a   118     <<<<<<<<<<<<<<
TERRY    Margaret         Ripon    9a   118     <<<<<<<<<<<<<<

<<<<<<<<<<<<<<and possibly this couple in the1871 census:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KZG7-5DP

Possibly your Margaret started life with a different surname and Plews was her stepfathers name

This is the other couple in 1871 just to verify who married who:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:VBHJ-MNP
and a birth reg for their daughter:
ATKINSON, MARGARET  PHILLIS      mothers maiden name HUTCHINSON
GRO Reference: 1869  D Quarter in RIPON  Volume 09A  Page 70

That 1871 1891 with the shared surname Metcalf could be coincidence, or they could be extended family.
The 1891  really does look like the right lass..

Thanks both! I need to do some looking into those records so it may take a few days to get back to you.

Pauline - I did look at Margaret A but discounted her as her marriage and children's records didn't seem consistent.
