Adoptee Barbara Joan Lowe
« on: Sunday 04 August 19 11:38 BST (UK) »
Hello,
I'm researching a book and would appreciate any guidance on what happened to a young woman called Barbara Joan Lowe in 1942. In that year Margaret Lowe, her mother was murdered in London. Barbara, born  13 6 27, was going to boarding school in at St Gabriel's (136 York Road, Southend). She was apparently adopted by Margaret and her husband.

Her father was Frederick George Lowe, who died in 1932 in Southend. Her uncle was William Francis Lowe, who lived in Brentwood, Essex, and was 58 in 1942.

I would like to find out what happened to Barbara after 1942. Did she marry, have children, move?

Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated.

If you can locate her in 1939, it may show later surnames.

OK, I'll try that. The family moved around a lot, but I'll try to pinpoint where they were in 1939. Thanks!

If she was born in 1927 then she could still be living, so you need to be careful about what you post. We cannot discuss living persons on Rootschat.

Can I ask are you 100% about her father being the Frederick George Lowe who died in 1932 in Southend?

There is a family tree on line that shows this man (died Dec 14 1932 aged 51)
as married to an Alice Maria GOING in 1910 (Oct 19 1910 in St. John the Baptist, Southend-on-sea)
with a link to them on the 1911 census and other records.
It also shows the headstone of Alice who died in 1918 and inscription for Frederick in 1932.
There is no reference in the tree to Frederick remarrying. LINK

The tree refers to a brother William Francis
His family are in Brentwood, Essex in 1939 and most of their lives.
In 1939 he was listed as a hairdresser & tobacconist
He had married Elna Tamar IRELAND in 1919, Romford
They had two sons at least
Charles Morris b.1920; d. 26.09.2008;
     m. Roma J PRICE in 1949; she died in 2010 Norwich, Norfolk
Gilbert Francis G. b. 28.12.1925; d. 09.04.2007;
     m. Irene E CRANE in 1956;
Also living with them in 1939 was William's father Morris.

William has been previously married to Alice Maud Carpenter in 1910
They had two daughters
Phyllis b 1912 d 1921 and Irene Florence b 1913 d 2001

There is a marriage of Frederick G Lowe m Margaret F C Burchett in 1921
Civil Record Rochford Essex 1921 Q4 V4a P1535
If this is the actual marriage of the lady who died seeing this record would give their father's names and confirm if the Frederick George referred to is the same man.

Hello,

Apologies for slow reply. I've just been away.

Barbara said Frederick George Lowe was her father, and that he died in 1932. I'm pretty certain that the marriage record you found for Margaret Burchett is correct, in that it is the same Frederick Lowe. Margaret was apparently born in New Zealand, I think. It is curious that the tree does not refer to Frederick remarrying.

The brother, William, gave a statement to police. It seems they were not very close. He did not seem aware his brother remarried until Frederick told him.

Thank you for the additional background. I've got plenty of homework here!

There doesn't appear to be any birth registration for Margaret in New Zealand between 1880 and 1910.

Either she wasn't born there or her birth surname was not Burchett.  I searched just using the surname and there are no records at all for this surname between the dates above which seems rather surprising.

Added: You may wish to consider obtaining the 1921 marriage certificate to see who her father was.
