Year of Reign
« on: Tuesday 06 August 19 14:51 BST (UK) »
Probably a stupid question, but what exactly does 26 Henry VIII mean?  Or 6 James I (England)?

What I am wondering is, does it correspond directly with one normal calender year, or is it calculated as being the full year from the coronation?  Like, would 6 James I be 1609, starting January 1st and ending December 31st, or would it be 24 March 1609- 24 March 1610?

The Regnal Years for Henry V111 are from 22 April to 21 April, and James 1 is 24 March to 23 March.
6 James 1 is 1608-1609

A Regnal Year is a year reckoned from the date or anniversary of a sovereign's accession.

By my calculation the current year is 68 Elizabeth. She became Queen in February 1952.

Thanks, Maiden Stone, it's good to have another example to work through.

A web serach for "Regnal year calculator" will give you several sites.
Researching Penge, Anerley, (incuding the Crystal Palace) and neighbouring parts of Beckenham, currently in London (Bromley), formerly Surrey and/or Kent.
