John Doyley, surveyor, 1775-1861

I'm wondering if anyone can help me find a baptism record for a John Doyley (possibly D'Oyley), born around 1775 in Wandsworth, died 5th October 1861 at Judd Street, Brunswick Square in London.

He married Mary Ann Dobson on 11th September 1800 in Sawbridgeworth, Hertfordshire and, as far as I can determine, they had 5 children born between 1803 and 1816, all of whom I've managed to trace.  Mary Ann died in 1849.

John Doyley was a land surveyor.  I've found him in 1841, 1851 and 1861 census returns and there are numerous entries in the London trade directories.  He had business premises in Greville Street, Hatton Garden in 1820, Frederick Street in Grays Inn in 1830 and Liverpool Street, Kings Cross in 1845.  His two sons, John King Doyley and William Doyley were also surveyors.

According to his probate record the executors responsible for his estate were Samuel Smith, his son-in-law, and his grandson, Samuel Smith junior.  Both Samuels were solicitors.

Colin....thanks for the suggestion.  I'm not a position to rule out anything yet but was expecting the baptism to be in London.  I'll check out the two John Doyleys you've found to see if I can find any further records.

Rosie....no, I haven't seen a complete enough transcript of the marriage record to show they married by licence.  Would the licence indicate father's name?  Do you have access to the Sawbridgeworh registers by any chance?

Trish...I had Susanna 1803, Holborn; John King 1805, Sawbridgeworth; Elizabeth 1807, Holborn; William 1812, Epping; Mary Anne Catherine 1816 Islington.  I'll check out the two other surviving children..

Sawbridgeworth records are on FreeREG so maybe a good look to check out Bapt there against ones you have

The Kent Bapt is a good possible as her names children John King and Susanna.

I've actually traced one of my maternal lines back to around 1700 and have found a Ward family in Sawbridgeworth who I'm trying to find out a bit more about.  I've started to flesh out their descendancy lines and have uncovered some very interesting connections and quite a few waifs and strays.

Susanna was a common girl's name in the Ward family around that time, as was John.  I have been wondering where the middle name King came from.

Trish....I’m now happy I have a full set of John Doyley’s children with your suggestions but the child called Matilda Anne was baptised in 1817 in St Andrew to a father called John D’Oyley who was a linen draper.  I’m therefore assuming Matilda Anne belonged to another unrelated family group.  All the other children check out correctly one way or another.
