Thomas Henry Bates
« on: Wednesday 07 August 19 17:24 BST (UK) »
Looking for information on my great grandfather. I know he was born in 1866, Kentish Town, London.  I also know he was a sailor/seaman/Royal Navy as stated in the few records that I have found.
He was on the ship Jersey City that sailed out of Bristol, can anyone point me in the direction to find out more about his time spent as a sailor.

Are you trying to find out specific information/records on Thomas Bates, or more general descriptions of life as a sailor?

1891 he was on board the ship Moss Rose in Sheerness Kent age 25 married listed as a mate.

This ship was sunk by the Germans 10 September 1917 transporting coal. So it's more likely he was a regular sailor or in the merchant marine. It was built 1888.

1901 he is at home 47 Loveridge Road Marylebone listed as a Steward

1904 he is sent to prison for a month for deserting his wife and children he is listed as a cook.

The maritime museum at Greenwich may be able to help as you know he sailed on the Jersey City.
