Who was Lizzie Johnston?
« on: Wednesday 07 August 19 20:29 BST (UK) »
Lizzie (Elizabeth) Johnston married Arthur McCartney ( a bachelor) on the 28th October 1881 in St Annes Cathedral, Belfast. Lizzie was a 22 year old Weaver and her father was John Johnston from McAdam Street, Belfast.

Arthur married again in 1889 but this time he is listed as a Widower so Lizzie died sometime in the intervening years. If anyone has any knowledge of Lizzie we would appreciate it.

The marriage certificate lists the residences of bride and groom at the time of the marriage. This may, or may not, be where there families lived.

The way other '2's are written on the page it could easily be 27 rather than 37.

It certainly seems a more likely age.

And to Derek, welcome to Rootschat!

Hi Folks,  thanks for all the help with Lizzie McCartney. The Eliza who died in April 1889 could well be the same lady if we assume she was 27 and not 37. I know Arthur remarried in June 1889 just a couple of months after Lizzies death but who knows what transpired between their marriage in 1881 and her entry into the Workhouse, whenever that had happened and for whatever reason!
His marriage to Lizzie may well have been effectively over for some time and with her death he was free to marry again.
If she really was 22 in 1881 then she could have been 29 at the time of death and, here again, could the 27 be a 29? Certainly the Fortingale Street and the Arthur McCartney both fit the circumstances. Many thanks for the welcome to RootsChat - I reckon it could be a very useful tool in the family hunt!

It may merely be that between Lizzie being admitted to hospital and her dying that husband Arthur moved. It's quite common for people in cities like Belfast to move frequently, sometimes at different addresses along the same street.

A bit more on Arthur & 2nd family-
