Albert Edward and Agnes Jane Palmer Death Leatherhead 1965
« on: Thursday 08 August 19 09:33 BST (UK) »
Good morning,
I wonder if anyone could help me solve the mystery of Albert and Agnes. Both died in Leatherhead in 1965, Albert in the Leatherhead hospital at the age of 86 (information from probate). Agnes' (née Lancaster) at the age of 88. Her death was registered in Surrey Mid Eastern in April/May/June 1965 and Albert's in the same district, but in Jan/Feb/March 1965. (Agnes' death is always given as 1951 in Bedfordshire on other family trees, but I am 99% sure this is incorrect.) As they died within a few months of each other, I wondered whether it was an accident or something "unnatural". I am thinking of ordering the death certificates, but as I have ordered quite a few this month already, I thought I might ask on here first  ;). I have tried the newspapers, but cannot find anything. Any help very gratefully received! Many thanks Tilly x

Given their ages, it is not uncommon for couples to die close together, sometimes the remains spouse just gives up.

Is  John Alfred JACOBS railway clerk a relative?  Since he was granted Probate for both their estates it is possible he or his descendants could tell you more about the circumstances of their deaths.

As both dates and places of death are shown in the Probate Register, you can ignore the information in the trees you have seen, they have obviously just picked a possible registration that fitted the name and county.

The probate gives home address of 9 Queen Anne's Terrace, Leatherhead Surrey for Agnes Jane Palmer, its the same address as the 1939 register, when she is with Albert E. She died 26 June 1965 at the Epsom District Hospital

Thank you so much, Jebber and Amondg! I did wonder whether, as you say, Agnes just gave up.

Thank you very much for the information about Agnes' probate, that does confirm my theory. I shall certainly look into John Alfred Jacobs. As far as I know, Albert and Agnes did not have children, so maybe he is a friend or nephew/cousin....

Oh - I have just had another look at the page with Albert's probate and now I see that Agnes is just above him!! I need new glasses.....

I am also looking into Agnes' birth as she is variously given as daughter/granddaughter to the same person (my Gt Gt Gt Grandfather) on various documents... I have a theory about that, too, but will know more when I get her birth cert. :)

There is so much wrong information on some family trees that just gets copied.....

I would also be interested in their burial, but no luck yet. I have tried various sites, but nothing comes up at all. Any ideas, please? Thank you again. Tilly xx

I don't think there is anything unnatural for a couple to pass away in the same year in their 80's.

I would look for the nearest cemetery/church to her last address and make enquiries there  :)

I would start with their local  Parish Church, then the local municipal cemetery. By the 1960s cremation was quite common, the Bereavement services of the local authority should able help with that, also the municipal burials.

In 1881/1891 she is granddaughter to Levi Lancaster and she names him as her father when she gets married.

So it looks like a daughter of Levi was her mother.  Possibly Mary Jane who dies in 1879 age 19  :(

Do let us know the answer when you get the certificate.
