Sorry all. Not sure this photo came out very well but I believe clicking on the paper clip below the photo allows you to see the entire image. Apologies, ::)

Resized.
I would suggest 1860's-70's.
We would need the benefit of the cardstock to be more precise.

Thanks Jim. I have asked my relation to send the other side of the photo and will post this when I receive it. Any idea on the photographer - could it be the oil and colour gentlemen mentioned in this line of despatches.
Many thanks
Roger

Absolutely no insult intended, but this lady looks like an alternative version of Whistler's Mother.

No insult taken at all. The Lady looks frail, although probably wasn't, and her outfit looks heavier than she does. I would love to know how she is related and it is amongst the Grimwood collection I am told.

Joseph Grimwood (4th May 1831 to 11th October 1892) after a career in the army (China, Crimea) joined the Suffolk Police and ultimately became an Inspector. He is my 2nd great grandfather.

Noting the photograher is in London, Hoxton I think, why would the Lady have a picture taken by Margetts in Kingsland Road if like many Grimwoods at that time lived in Suffolk. Maybe she lived there.....oh to have a time machine.

With thanks
Roger

Hi. I’m writing a novel set in Dalston in 1969 and came across your question whilst researching a factory in the area. Margetts Jam factory is actually mentioned in the story. The factory itself was behind a row of houses on the corner or Dalston Lane and Wayland Avenue, opposite The Samuel Lewis Trust Dwellings (where I lived as a child) That was/is known as Margetts Corner.  I went to Amhurst Road junior school, behind the factory, close to Hackney Downs Station and at playtimes, clearly remember the smell of Jam being made. I believe the factory was accessed from Wayland avenue. Hope this helps, even if it is a bit belated.
