Kilsyth
« on: Friday 09 August 19 15:56 BST (UK) »
Hi I'm looking for some help please. I have a birth certificate for an ancestor born in Kilsyth in 1862. I had originally thought the place of birth was Oldtower. However looking at it again it may be Oldtown. Does anyone know where that might have been? Thank you.

I've come across Oldtown in Kilsyth too, and assumed that it meant the old town of Kilsyth.

You might find it useful to read through https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/stirlingshire-os-name-books-1858-61/stirlingshire-volume-16/1

or take a look at https://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/#zoom=16&lat=55.9839&lon=-4.0534&layers=5&b=1
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
