Thomas Alfred Curtis (again) puzzle
« on: Monday 12 August 19 15:50 BST (UK) »
I think I have posted about me attempting to find Thomas A. Curtis but I can't find the original post.
The kind people here pointed me in the direction that Thomas married Susan Webb after Lillian (Clewes) Iredale. But I am second guessing myself that this is the correct man.  Here's the timeline:

Lillian Clewes m Henry Iredale in Toronto Dec. 1890
Henry Iredale died 1897.

Lillian married Thomas A. Curtis in Essex, ON May 22 1899

On the 1900 US census, Lillian is in Cooks County, Illinois and listed as a widow.

Lillian married Harry Gill Dec 17 1903, using the name of Lillian Iredale

Now, onto Thomas A. Curtis - his marriage certificate to Lillian says:

NameThos A CurtisAge32Birth Yearabt 1867Birth PlaceLiverpoolMarriage Date22 May 1899Marriage PlaceEssex, Ontario, CanadaFatherJ H CurtisMotherLouise J Mackey CurtisSpouseLillie IredaleHousehold Members
NameAge
Name
Thos A Curtis
Name
Louise J Mackey Curtis
Name
J H Curtis
Name
Lillie Iredale
Name
Agnes Wright
Name
John Cleves

and on the marriage to Susan Webb, it says:

NameSusie WebbAge24Birth Yearabt 1884Birth PlacePlumstead, EngMarriage Date27 Jan 1908Marriage PlaceYork, Ontario, CanadaFatherSamuel George WebbMotherCatherine Reinbird WebbSpouseAlfred I CurtisHousehold Members
NameAge
Name
Alfred I Curtis
Name
Louise Jane Moxey Curtis
Name
John William Curtis
Name
Susie Webb
Name
Catherine Reinbird Webb
Name
Samuel George Webb

So the anomalies are: my Thomas A. Curtis is listed as Alfred I Curtis on the 2nd marriage cert. and his father is listed as J.H. Curtis and mother is Louise Mackey on the marriage to Lillian and they are listed as J.W. Curtis and Louise Moxey on the marriage to Susan.  AND as far as I can tell, Thomas and Lillian are still married to each other !!

What do you think?

hmm ... no divorce ... Found Alfred on the 1911 census but no wife named!! No sign of them on the 1921 census.  But I digress.  I am really looking for a divorce or annullment between Thomas Alfred Curtis and Lillian ..... where would I look for this?  Would it need to be done in the same place the marriage took place, ie Essex or could a divorce/annullment be done anywhere?

as always, I so very much all of your interest and help!

This looks like them in the 1921 census, lines 2 and 3....

http://central.bac-lac.gc.ca/.item/?app=Census1921&op=pdf&id=e003040520

They can be found at the same address in the 1940 voters list as Thomas Alfred and Mrs Thomas Alfred. They can be found at the address in the obit in the 1945 voters list as Thomas A and Mrs Thomas A.

Looking at the image of the marriage for Alfred and Susie, I would say the initial is a T rather than an I. As for the differences in the names of parents on the marriage records, these are transcripts (and maybe even transcripts of transcripts) and the transcriber would have written it as they saw it.

Afraid I can't help with a divorce/annulment.

And.....

This is possibly them in the 1911 census, lines 45 and 46. Alfred is a printer. A wife is listed with a surname only. Probably the one you found, lorrainec?

Thanks, PB!
That's the couple in 1921 - Thanks so much.

Wonder if Lillian got an annullment in Chicago ... think I will peruse that path.

Thanks so much!

Back after a break!
I still cannot find a divorce or annulment for Lillian and Thomas.
Possible that Lillian absconded to Chicago and "forgot" she was married?
Any way to prove this?

Thanks so much!
